Dentures (false teeth) are prosthetic devices constructed to restore missing teeth; they are supported by the adjacent soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Dentures can be complete or partial. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain present.
Advances in dentistry have made much improvement in dentures. They are more comfortable and natural looking, however they still require some "getting used to." In the beginning, your dentist may want to see you often to make sure the dentures fit. Over time, your mouth will change and your dentures may need to be adjusted or replaced. Be sure to let your dentist handle these adjustments.
Do clean your dentures every day to help your smile keep its attractive appearance. If you don’t, plaque may form on dentures, making them less bright. Failure to clean your dentures regularly can result in staining and denture odor, as well.
A conventional denture is a full removable denture and placed in your mouth after the remaining teeth are removed and tissues have healed, which may take several months.
An immediate denture is also a removable denture, but it is inserted on the same day that the remaining teeth are removed. Your dentist will take measurements and make models of your jaw. You don’t have to be without teeth during the healing period, but may need to have the denture remade after your jaw has healed.
Sometimes some of your teeth need to be saved to preserve your jawbone and provide stability and support for the denture. An overdenture fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth after they have been prepared by your dentist. Dental Implants can provide the same function.
At night remove your dentures and clean it and store in water. Do not wear dentures 24 hours a day; give some time to relax your gums and bone. Clean your mouth and prostheses daily to maintain a proper oral hygiene.
